Why Ruin What's Ours
2022-ongoing.
Why Ruin What's Ours is a collaborative photography project undertaken by five youths residing in the Whitton, Whitehouse, and Castle Hill estates in Northwest Ipswich.
Over a span of eight weeks, these individuals came together to discuss their daily experiences within the community and explore perceptions of young people in their neighbourhoods.
Together, we created images with a large format 5x4 camera to capture the essence of their lives amidst ordinary surroundings, challenging stereotypes and representations of youth.
Each participant had access to a 35mm camera for personal use outside the project sessions. This ongoing endeavour serves as a platform for these young residents to express themselves authentically and exhibit their distinct personalities, thus reshaping the narrative surrounding their presence within the estates.
